Lyndal Parker-Newlyn
A/Prof Lyndal Parker-Newlyn is Associate Professor of Medical Education at the University of Wollongong. Graduating from Newcastle with a B.Med (Honours) in 1993, Lyndal undertook initial training in Newcastle before joining the Royal Australian Navy and being posted to Nowra NSW as the Airfield Emergency Officer then Senior Medical Officer. Lyndal gained her FRACGP in 1999 and fell in love with rural general practice and the NSW south coast (and her husband!) eventually choosing to leave the defence force rather than leave the area. As a GP in Nowra, she was Chair of the Shoalhaven Division of General Practice, and Deputy Chair of both the NSW Rural Doctors Network and the Australian Rural and Remote Workforce Agencies group as well as holding positions on Commonwealth advisory committees representing GPs.
In 2006 Lyndal commenced her academic career and in the last ten years has been responsible for much of the educational flavour and curriculum delivery at UOW particularly the clinical aspects such as the Case Based Learning activities and core clinical presentation blueprints. She is Academic Leader of the Admissions & Selection process for medicine and her research interests in Medical Education are focused around approaches to learning, curriculum design and delivery and student selection, particularly selecting the best students for rural and regional medical practice. She also holds a Master of Health Science (Medical Education) a Master of Education (Educational Leadership) and is currently undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy (Medicine) in the selection of rural medical students.
Lyndal is a keen user of social media and since winning her own battle with obesity in 2012, has founded a very successful Facebook page, online support group and blog to motivate and inspire others to also make positive lifestyle change. Demystifying nutritional messages and empowering patients to make preventive health changes of their own is her personal interest and passion.
