As part of the Australian Government Department of Health, the Therapeutic Goods Administration safeguards and enhances the health of the Australian community through effective and timely regulation of medicines, medical devices and biologicals.  The TGA employs around 60 medical officers from a range of clinical backgrounds, and is accredited for advanced training in public health medicine.

TGA medical officers apply their clinical knowledge to make decisions about the benefits and risks of therapeutic goods, based on the assessment of clinical data from a range of sources such as clinical trials, observational studies and post-market adverse event reports.

TGA medical officers work as

  • primary reviewers of data packages to support product approvals or variations;
  • as decision-makers on granting and maintaining marketing approval for products;
  • investigators for post-market safety signals;
  • and as advisers generally to other scientists and staff at the TGA.

This session will give an overview of medical officer careers at the TGA, and provide some insights into the day-to-day life of a medical officer at the TGA.
