When I grow up, I want to be... a defender (50622)

Melanie WL Tan

When I grow up I want to be… a defender? An advocate? An adviser? A consultant? An educator? A writer? A video producer? I aspire to be all these things - having worked in medicine and law, at the interface of both, and on their periphery. I am still growing up!

I have been an adviser to doctors, I have worked with insurers, I have taught students, I have presented in media and written content. Having realised there is no such thing as a singular ‘ideal’ role for me, I finally bit the bullet and went out on my own. Why can’t I do everything I love to do, all in conjunction, or parallel?

My career has very much been a journey of self-discovery - a pursuit of fulfilment and inspiration. Yes, I am a doctor – in my heart I will always be. Yes, I am a lawyer – and to that extent a ‘defender’ of doctors. But deep down, I yearn to be creative in some way, and that has always been the missing link. I also value freedom, which most conventional jobs as doctors or lawyers cannot offer.

This presentation will tell my story of an inter-continental journey through the different disciplines of medicine and law, and an ongoing endeavour to combine them in a way that allowed me to be me. It is a story about paving your way through convention, searching for a ‘box’ that doesn’t exist in our structured world, and building your own box. It’s about learning to enjoy the adventure as a misfit, and staying true to yourself regardless of adversity or what people think.
